As a barrel roller bearing, this bearing carries high radial loads and accommodates misalignment. This variant features increased radial clearance (C3). This open variant of the barrel roller bearing is laid out for operating conditions under which the mounted clearance is reduced more than in the standard case.

As with every barrel roller bearing, the single-row set of barrel-shaped rollers aligns itself on the spherical outer raceway and accommodates misalignment and shaft deflection under predominantly radial load. Compared with the standard configuration, the clearance here is increased (C3): an interference fit and a temperature difference between inner and outer ring reduce the mounted clearance, and the larger initial play still keeps the operating clearance within the intended range instead of letting it fall as far as a preloading of the rolling contact.

That is the usual case with a tight inner ring fit, under high load with the corresponding heating, and in drives whose shaft temperature lies well above that of the housing. The open form leaves sealing and lubricant retention to the surrounding construction, whose seal must follow the alignment movement of the bearing. For the design, the fit, the temperature difference between the rings, the misalignment and the radial force should be assessed together.
