The barrel roller bearing carries load through a single row of barrel-shaped rollers running on a spherical outer raceway; the roller set thereby aligns itself and the bearing position accommodates misalignment between shaft and housing as well as shaft deflection without producing edge loading. The design is laid out for radial load; axial forces are permissible only to a small extent and belong at a separate bearing position.

The open form has no seal of its own, so sealing, initial filling and relubrication fall to the surrounding construction — and at a self-aligning position it must be noted that the seal has to follow the alignment movement. The normal radial clearance is matched to common fits and operating temperatures at which the operating clearance settles within the intended range.
