A contact seal at both end faces keeps dust, fibres and moisture out of the rolling chamber — at the mounting locations of this design that is the usual reason for the selection.

This version of the insert bearing is closed at both end faces with a contact seal. Its purpose lies less in lubricant retention alone than in excluding the environment: insert bearings are used on exposed shafts where the rolling chamber cannot be enclosed structurally — in conveying equipment, blowers, agricultural machinery and attachments — and there dust, fibres, splash water and wear debris are present directly at the bearing position.

The seal lip prevents these substances from entering the rolling contact, where hard particles leave indentations and contaminate the grease charge. The counterpart is a frictional torque at the lip which generates heat and lowers the permissible speed; the temperature and media limits of the seal material are added to it. In this design that carries less weight than elsewhere, since its speed limit is in any case co-determined by the locking on a shaft with wider tolerances and not by the rolling contact alone.

The rest of the construction is that of the insert bearing: a spherical outer surface for seating in a housing's spherical seat and hence for aligning during mounting, and a widened inner ring with grub screws, an eccentric locking collar or an adapter sleeve for the direct grip on the drawn shaft. Rings and balls are made of standard bearing steel.
