The spherical roller thrust bearing carries load through barrel-shaped rollers that run at an angle to the bearing axis between a flat shaft washer and a spherical housing washer. Two properties follow from this geometry at once: the roller set can swivel within the spherical raceway and thereby accommodates alignment errors and shaft deflection, and the angled position allows a limited radial share to be taken alongside very high longitudinal forces.

At the same time the contact angle produces a radial reaction force under axial load, which the surrounding design must support.
