In the open form the position can be flushed before assembly and the clearance checked; the narrowed tolerance makes that result comparable from unit to unit. A clearance class describes a range, not a value — and for part of the applications the width of that range is the genuinely critical quantity.

Normal radial clearance with narrowed tolerances keeps the position of the normal range and reduces the permitted scatter within that class, so that two bearings of the same designation lie closer together in the mounted state than they would under the undivided normal class. Applications in which this counts share one feature: the residual clearance is not set on the individual unit but is dictated by the design — by a solid distance sleeve, a machined shoulder or a matched arrangement whose preload follows from dimensions rather than from a tightening operation.

Running noise, vibration behaviour and the radial stiffness of an arrangement likewise respond directly to the remaining clearance, so a narrower distribution leads to a more narrowly distributed result. The narrowed tolerance does not replace the choice of the right class: interference fit and temperature gradient still consume the same share as under the undivided normal clearance, and where that share is large, a wider clearance class remains the appropriate answer.

Because this bearing is supplied in the open form, the rolling chamber is accessible before mounting, which permits checking the clearance, the initial filling and a lubricant selection matched to the application — in series production with a defined grease quantity this is often part of the same requirement that prompted the narrowed tolerance.

Sealing and relubrication remain the task of the surrounding design. Through-hardened standard bearing steel supplies the hardness and dimensional accuracy on which the narrow distribution can rest in the first place.
