This is an inner ring, a replacement or complementary part for needle roller bearings, without its own rolling elements. The inner ring carries no rolling elements of its own; its sole function is the inner raceway it provides for the matching needle roller and cage assembly, drawn cup or needle roller bearing without an inner ring. It therefore opens up needle roller bearing positions on shafts that cannot serve as a raceway themselves for reasons of material or manufacturing; raceway quality moves from the shaft seat into a replaceable part.

What governs the pairing is the outside diameter, which forms the raceway, together with the bore and width, which must match the shaft seat and the width of the rolling element set. The ring is normally fitted with an interference fit and located axially against the surrounding design; lubrication and sealing are provided by the surroundings in every case.

For the design, the dimensional chain of shaft seat, ring section and rolling element set should be assessed, together with the ratings of the associated needle roller bearing rather than those of the ring.
