This track roller brings neither a sealing nor a shielding element with it; the rolling chamber lies exposed on both sides. The frictional torque therefore comes out lowest, and with this design that is a load-bearing property and not a side quantity: the roller is not driven but set turning by the contact with its track, so easy starting decides directly whether it rolls or slides on the track.

At the same time the rolling set is accessible for lubrication. The form is therefore intended for mounting situations in which the machine takes over the lubrication — in oil-lubricated areas, under oil mist, or at bearing positions with a relubrication bore in the pin through which grease is fed directly into the rolling chamber. Where such a supply is absent, the form is the wrong choice: debris from the track, dust and moisture reach the rolling elements unhindered, and initial filling as well as relubrication rest entirely with the surrounding construction.

The load-carrying construction remains that of the track roller: the thick-walled outer ring, hardened through the running depth, takes the contact pressure from the track contact and rotates through the load, so that the most heavily stressed location travels over the entire circumference. The hardness, surface finish and course of the mating track belong to the layout and limit the pairing regardless of the size of the roller; the profile of the running surface fixes how much angular error relative to the track is permissible before the pressure migrates to the edge. Rings and rolling elements are made of standard bearing steel.
