Two rows of balls run on a common spherical outer raceway whose centre of curvature lies on the bearing axis. The inner ring assembly therefore remains free to swivel inside the outer ring: misalignment between positions and the deflection of long shafts are absorbed without edge loading the raceways. The price of that compliance is the shallow conformity of the spherical outer raceway — the contact area is small, load ratings are correspondingly lower than for closely conforming grooves, and only modest axial load is permissible.

The type belongs where alignment error is certain to occur and radial load stays moderate, such as long shafts in pedestal housings and in conveying equipment. The contact seal bears against its counterface and closes the rolling chamber against dust, splash water and wash-out; in return it raises frictional torque and limits permissible speed.

Rings and rolling elements are made of through-hardened standard bearing steel. The slightly increased radial clearance provides reserve for tighter fits and for temperature differences between inner and outer ring, as they occur on shafts that run warm.
