For bearing positions in dusty or wet surroundings, this version moves the protection of the rolling contact from the housing into the spherical roller bearing itself.

In this design the contact seal on both sides is not a convenience but often the actual precondition for a usable service life. Spherical roller bearings typically stand at heavily loaded positions in dusty, wet or muddy surroundings — on conveyors, vibrating screens, crushers and drums — and it is precisely there that housing sealing alone often does not carry the protection.

The integrated seal keeps the grease charge with the two roller rows and keeps plant debris out of the rolling contact, where hard particles leave indentations and, as a consequence, local peaks in contact pressure. The design particularity lies in the alignment capability: because the inner ring unit swivels relative to the outer ring, the seal does not work on a fixed counterface but on one whose position changes with the misalignment; the permissible misalignment of the sealed version is therefore smaller than that of the open one.

Likewise the frictional torque and the material of the seal lip limit the permissible speed and operating temperature more closely than the rolling contact itself does, and whether relubrication is provided for depends on the specific version. The load-carrying behaviour is unchanged: both roller rows run on the common spherical outer raceway and transmit high radial forces as well as axial forces in both directions.

Rings and rolling elements are made of through-hardened standard bearing steel, and the normal radial clearance is matched to common fits and operating temperatures.
