What makes them different

Standard bearings are heat-stabilised to about 120 °C — beyond that they lose hardness and dimensional stability. High-temperature bearings such as the SKF VA201, VA208 and VA228 variants are designs of their own, not just heat stabilisation: manganese-phosphate-coated rings and rolling elements, radial clearance of multiples of C5 and graphite or polyalkylene glycol/graphite lubrication, for operating temperatures up to 250 °C (VA201) or 350 °C (VA208, VA228).

Lubrication is the key

Above ~150 °C normal greases coke. High-temperature variants therefore use a graphite cage (VA208, VA228) or a polyalkylene glycol/graphite lubricating paste (VA201), at reduced speed limits. Open VA201 bearings require relubrication; the other variants do not. The large clearance (multiples of C5) compensates thermal expansion of shaft and housing.

Applications and selection

Typical: kiln cars, roller conveyors in hardening shops, dryer rolls, paint and powder-coating lines. High-temperature deep groove bearings in common sizes (2Z/VA208 variant) ship from stock; high-temperature housed units and special sizes on request.
