Why bearing currents destroy bearings
Frequency inverters generate high-frequency shaft voltages. Discharging through the bearing they melt micro-craters into the raceways (EDM effect) and cause the typical fluting โ the bearing fails long before its calculated life. Mainly affected: inverter-fed motors, generators and traction drives.
How the insulation works
Insulated bearings carry an aluminium-oxide ceramic coating on the outer or inner ring โ known as SKF INSOCOAT (VL0241/VL2071) or FAG J20AA/J20AB. It blocks DC and low-frequency currents; dimensions are unchanged, so they swap in for the standard bearing without design changes.
Selection and mounting
Common practice is one insulated bearing on the non-drive end (NDE); against high-frequency EDM currents, hybrid bearings with ceramic rolling elements are the next step โ available on request. Insulated deep groove and cylindrical roller bearings for common motor frame sizes ship from stock.
