Hybrid bearing
Hybridlager
Hybrid bearings combine steel rings with ceramic rolling elements, typically silicon nitride (Si3N4). The ceramic elements are electrically insulating, harder than steel and of lower density. Two use cases dominate: in electric motors and generators, hybrid bearings interrupt current passage and prevent electrical fluting of the raceways; in high-speed applications such as machine tool spindles, the lighter rolling elements reduce centrifugal loads and improve running behaviour. Hybrid deep groove ball bearings and spindle bearings are dimensionally interchangeable with their all-steel counterparts, so upgrading usually requires no design change. The higher price is offset by longer service life in demanding applications.
